Education
For more than a century Armidale has achieved the status of being an important Centre of Education.
Over the years there have been many changes as Armidale moved from being a town to educate
the children of farming families to more universal education for all.
A number of faith based private schools such as TAS, NEGS and PLC were built on substantial grounds
to offer Boarding school education mostly to the children of farming properties out west.
The Catholic Diocese ensured that a catholic eduation was available through
St Mary's Primary School, St Ursula's College (girls) and De La Salle College (boys)
St Ursula's and De La Salle amalgamated in 1975 as a co-ed catholic high school, O'Connor College.
Armidale High School (founded in 1920) and Duval High School (founded in 1972)
amalgamated in 2019 into the highly modern Armidale Secondary College
built on the grounds of the former Armidale High School.
The Armidale Teachers College was built in 1928-1930 to train teachers for country service.
The University of New England was founded as an arm of Sydney University in 1838
offering a range of courses in Agriculture.
Many primary schools and Early Education Centres were introduced as the population rose.
Recently the Plymouth Brethren open the MET School and One School Global to cater for their families.
The Waldorf School and Mininbah Primary School (Aboriginal) add to the diversity in eduational offerings.
